Lovebird Ring

What is a Web Ring?

A web ring is a number of related web sites linked together so that you can move from one site to the next, eventually ending back at the beginning of the ring. A web ring can be a fun way to explore the internet while focusing on a specific topic, in this case, lovebirds.

How Do I Join?

There are a few requirements for joining The Lovebird Ring.

1. Your web site should have something to do with lovebirds, with at least one paragraph and a photograph of your bird.

2. Your site must be family friendly and must not contain any material that is not suitable for ALL ages.

3. Your page should have all links and graphics working. Notify us immediately if your URL changes or your site will be removed from the ring.  Please do not submit sites that are under heavy construction. You need to have up at least a basic site to be included.

4. Commercial sites must have some focus on love birds-at least on the page in which the lovebird ring template appears. In other words, if you sell toys specifically intended for lovebirds the page should have a picture of a lovebird with one of the toys and there should be some information as to why these items are good for lovebirds. If we feel toys on the page are not appropriate for lovebirds, we reserve the right to keep the site out of the ring. This is a personal judgement based on our experience with these birds.

5. The ring template must appear on the page the web ring is linked to, or if you have a special web ring/link page, the page that the web ring is linked to must have a clear link to the web ring/link page. Therefore, it should not take more than one click to find the page with the web ring template once a visitor gets to your site. If we have to "search" for the web ring template, we reserve the right to change the connecting link URL to the page the template appears on. If your link is a dark blue typed link in a giant paragraph of dark blue text it will be easily missed and you should change it accordingly.

6. If you have a frames-only site we recommend you add links to the bottom of the main frame area that allow non-frames viewing of your site. We do not like it when the site that comes after yours ends up being viewed in your frames (with your URL showing in the address window). If you can imagine, if frames sites like this were linked one after the other, the sites would appear in smaller and smaller frames, one site within the next site's frames and so on and so on, until it really becomes ridiculous. Also, it is not right for someone's site to be forced to be viewed with your url showing in the browser address window. It's a misrepresentation in fact. FYI--frames are a big pain and they sometimes cause problems with search engines too so you once their novelty has worn off for you, you might consider doing a pseudo-frames design that avoids these problems. We reserve the right to change your URL to the non-frames address and we do this all the time. If your site does not have links at the bottom of the main pages, the viewer will be forced to move on to the next site via the web ring template on that page and will not be able to view your site. Frankly, there's no point in having the web ring on your page in this case.

What's your URL? It's the address of your site and it MUST include http:// then the full name.
When you finish filling out the form, you can return here for further information.  Oh, and if you mistype your email address I might be able to track you down via your url if I have the time, but it's better if you type your email address carefully and accurately!

PLEASE NOTE: You are not sent the html code automatically when you fill out the form. We first check the site out and make sure it meets our requirements, then we send the code. This helps us maintain the integrity of the ring.

WE RESERVE THE RIGHT to remove any site from the ring that no longer meets our criteria. If your site causes problems with the ring, such as forcing sites that come after your site to be viewed in YOUR FRAMES, we will notify you of the problem. If you cannot rectify it, we reserve the right to remove you from the ring.

If you love lovebirds and have a site that shows this in some way, please join us-we are a growing ring with over 50 excellent sites as of January 1999! If you're interested, join now.

Now That I've Filled Out the Form, What Do I Do?

1. You can get the code HERE (opens in new window). Then follow the instructions below for changing them to match your site: Code page will open in new window so you can click back here for instructions on how to use them.

You can also get the generic code supplied by webring.org - it's a little easier if you are not comfortable working with html.

Copying and Pasting Code

Once you have that code page open, to get the code, simply go to VIEW at the top of the browser, then SOURCE. You will then see the code on this page. Copy and paste everything on that page into the place on your site where you want the template.

(highligh code with mouset; control-C to copy from my page; control-V to paste it into your page)

You can also simply save the code page by going to File, Save As in the browser, then you can use it later to copy and paste it into your html page.

You will need to open your webpage in an html editor of some sort (most computers come with notepad or wordpad, both work)

IMPORTANT

You will have to make a few changes to the code . Change YOUR NAME to your name. Change the E-MAIL to your E-MAIL. Change the 00 number to the NUMBER you were automatically given when you signed up for the ring. This occurs SIX times. It will say id=00 and you have to change the 00 to your number.

2. You will also need to copy the graphics for the ring. Click here to do so. Remember, you save these to your computer, then upload them to your own server or you'll see blank places on your template.

3. When you have inserted the code and uploaded your document and the graphics to your server, check that it's running properly by looking at the links. If all seems well, email us to let us know you can be added to the ring. If you're having problems, email us and I'll try to help out but I should warn you it can take me forever to get back to you on this due to my already huge workload (sorry :-( )!

It is easiest to insert your code using a basic html editor or Notepad (which comes automatically with Windows). Netscape Composer gives a premature end of tag warning that you can't override--even though I made the table in Composer and it is perfectly fine--this is a glitch with Netscape Composer.

This is what the web ring template should look like (although some sites like to change it slightly-as long as it looks relatively "normal" it's fine by us).

Please note: if you use the code from the template below rather than waiting for us to email it, you have to change the id number to match the id number assigned you when you filled out the form. This occurs 6 times (id=1 in this template) and must be changed in each instance to the id number you were emailed. You also need to change the the name the site is owned by to your name and the email address for your name to your email address. Got all that? You can go here to see the template by itself on a page and get the code more easily.

This is what it looks like - although you change the "Your Name" to, well, your name ;-)
